Overview
From Contemporary Calligraphy into Painting
•  “Integrating Calligraphy with Painting, and renew the images and spirits of Chinese characters. ” This is the original creative concept that Liu Dongyao explored. The artist learned to paint at the age of 7 and calligraphy at the age of 10. He has been absorbing nourishment in Chinese and Japanese art, and visual arts for many years. He is constantly creating contemporary scenes of traditional calligraphy, and intergrating other modern arts like freehand ink experimentation, ink painting and graphic design.

• In the work of Liu Dongyao, he pays attention not only exquisite visual composition aesthetics, but also the profound meanings and literary artistic conceptions of Chinese characters, e.g. the Taoist philosophical significance behind the spirit of calligraphy.

• Liu Dongyao has a meticulous observation of nature and sensitive experience of life. A stone lying on the roadside, a falling flower, a flowing river, all make Liu Dongyao feel the meaning of life all the time; also the complicated interpersonal relations and social issues, which constantly arouse the artist’s perception and drive him to express his inner heart into his painting. Each piece of work of Liu Dongyao translates the freedom,  the momentary change and flow happened in the nature, and transmits into an own story and emotions that are poetic and profound... He is convinced that the integration of emotion is the life and soul given to the artwork, and only in this way can the work truly "alive".

Biography
Calligrapher From China to Japan

Born in 1977, China

LIU Dongyao learned painting at age of 7 and calligraphy at age of 10.

Then he learned Chinese traditional art and contemporary art in professional art high school of Shanghai.

He is graduated from the Toho Gakuen Media Training College of Japan in Tokyo.

• Chinese calligraphy is loyal to the 4000-year-old historical tradition. It studies techniques and brushwork, pays attention to the realistic aesthetics of copying, and pursues the reproduction of ancient literati handwriting and spirit.

• In Japan, LIU Dongyao learned different arts of calligraphy. Japanese calligraphy is a unique comprehensive art of calligraphy. It is more open, pays attention to the expression of the explicit artistic sense of calligraphy, and adds romanticism and unrestrained visual impact. The study in Japan had a great impact on him.

• The artist kept thinking about his own artistic conception and expression of calligraphy. The creation of calligraphy should not be confined to the framework rules of traditional calligraphy. By keeping Chinese tradition, LIU Dongyao integrated his own personality, boldly used imagination and ink painting, and created a unique freehand calligraphy style.
