The two Chinese characters “格物 Gé Wù” means to “investigatin matters”. This artwork is the first piece of the series of “ 8 Articles of The Way of Great Learning”.
“The Way of Great Learning are the fundamental ideas of Confucius’s teaching, and also the principles upon whichConfucianism is based. They were recoded by Confucius disciple Zeng Shen (505 BC - 434 BC) into one of the four mostfamous Chinese ancient books, the “Book of Rites ”.
The book says: “The starting point of a person’s education is ‘investigating matters’ and ‘reaching knowledge’. Investigatingthings means investigating the natures and principles of the myriad things of the universe. Then you can know what life is likeand gain wisdom from it.”
