Overview
An Old Childhood Dream
• The figures of Lieven D'Haese sometimes look like characters playing a role in forgotten stories. He takes us on a journey, a childhood memory, an adventure into the wild nature…, with a lot of delicacy and poetry. This is the artist's genius in wandering us through a mysterious and sometimes dreamlike space, and remind us the child remains in our hearts to return to our initial dreams...

• All of the artist's figures are men or children. It is always very difficult to imagine their ages and this is the artist's genius in wandering us through a mysterious and sometimes dreamlike space time. Youth symbolizing hope, and old age illustrating wisdom, .. Lieven D'Haese plays at blurring the lines.

• Lieven Haese’s works are touching, human and reveal a very positive message to those who know how to look at them. They are unique in their genre, the artist’s signature is very unique.

• Lieven D'Haese, from a renowned family of sculptors, brings his artistic philosophy and technical mastery to life in each piece. Rejecting mere reproductions, he insists on creating every sculpture from scratch, feeling personally responsible for every step in its unique completion. Rather than working from a single design template, he designs and crafts each work simultaneously, approaching every new edition as a unique creation. Lieven individually sculpts a completely new, original and different wax sculpture for each bronze edition, bypassing molds and delivering the one-of-a-kind piece to the foundry in Belgium. At the foundry, the sculpture is cast in bronze, then meticulously hand-finished by Lieven himself. He refines each detail, applies a unique patina, and even hand-crafts and personalized base, infusing every piece with his distinct vision and craftsmanship. As a result, each edition emerges as a truly unique work, crafted entirely by the artist’s hand and expressive style, demonstrating exceptional artistry in every detail.

Biography

A Belgian Artist Grown up in Africa

Stem from a Family of Sculptors

• 1957: born in Moanda, Congo

• Lieven D'Haese stems from a Belgian family of sculptors (among them Reinhoud/ Cobra and Roel d’Haese), musicians and writers. He followed courses in painting and graphics at the Saint-Luke Institute in Brussels and Ghent, and at the Art School in Aalst.

• In Roland Monteyne’s studio, Lieven D'Haese mastered an old childhood dream: casting sculptures in bronze. Nevertheless, his artworks still give away the original graphic artist. The outlines of statues Lieven D'Haese achieve the right balance between light and dark, between mass and space. Even within this mass, in the tiny details of the heads, the anatomy and the draping of the wide clothes, the graphic clair-obscur stands out.
