Provenance
In Greek mythology, Philemon and Baucis are a Phrygian man and wife. They hospitably received Zeus and Hermes when their richer neighbors turned away the two gods, who were disguised as wayfarers. In return, the couple was saved from a flood that destroyed their village. Their cottage was changed into a temple, and they became priest and priestess of it. Later the gods granted their wish that they might both die at the same time by turning them into trees—Baucis into a linden, Philemon into an oak. Among literary sources the story is found only in Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses.Exhibitions
