This column of dogs could have been several meters high if I had wanted to represent all dog breeds! I was content to model mine and those that I regularly come across in my village.
Astonished, they wonder what possessed the sculptor to put them in such a situation. In real life, they hunt, guard men and livestock, run on dog tracks, or even console with their faithful presence. There I used them as a style exercise. Perhaps this column symbolizes their dismay in the face of genetic selection which, from century to century, has gradually distanced them from the wolf. We could undoubtedly also relate this to modern man who can question what Cro- Magnon remains in him in our society of extreme consumption.
Our dogs accompany us and help us maintain contact with our deep origins, from the lapdog to the Neapolitan mastiff. I pay tribute in my own way to their patience, their attachment, their incomprehension in the face of the violence to which they are sometimes subject.
