The “sliced up” nature of Miramontes’ characters creates the image of a body reduced to its basic footprint. Destined to disappear, all that remains is the body of a memory....
The “sliced up” nature of Miramontes’ characters creates the image of a body reduced to its basic footprint.
Destined to disappear, all that remains is the body of a memory.
This relationship with memory is particularly visible in Bather featuring a female bather in an early twentieth century swimming costume. We can admire the gentle shape of this woman’s body as she tests the water with her big toe, almost appearing ready to faint.
Isabel Miramontes gives each of her sculptures a soul of his own. Each figure carries within it a message delivered by a movement, a posture, an expression. To achieve this near perfection, the sculptor shapes the material, lightens it, softens it, bares it, works the curves until reaching this subtle and powerful balance.
